Every cricketer dreams of playing for their country, but for most it never comes true. However for Andy Sapey who plays locally for Trull CC that dream has been realised and he is playing for England Overs 60s!
So how did all this come about?
“I had a good season in 2025 and the England selectors saw my stats and invited me for a trial in Derbyshire which I did quite well in and got selected for the squad and since then I have played in two games
“One was in Cardiff against Wales and the other was in Stratford on Avon against Western Australia- I did ok I got 3/19 and didn’t bat in one and got 16 in the other and one for 20 odd.
“I’m pretty fit and my fielding is good which helps a great deal and I can run after the ball.”
How does Andy describe himself as a player?
“I’m a batting all rounder because I generally open the innings for Trull and Somerset Over 60s and then come on fourth or fifth change - I can control the batters quite well.
“The last three games for Trull I have done pretty well, I got an unbeaten 102, a 93 not out and this weekend I got 59 so I’m in a bit of form.”
Andy was born in Norwich and played a lot of his cricket for Halstead in the East Anglian Premier League before he moved to Somerset 25 years ago since when he has played for Bishops Lydeard and more recently for Trull. He has also been part of the Somerset 50s and 60s set up for 8 years.
“I was over the moon when I got the call to invite me to play for the England Over 60s. It’s all very professional and very serious in terms of the expectations about how you play the game and personal fitness, and commitment to the cause which is what I like- its right up my street.
“You have to buy all of your England kit - sadly there is no funding from the ECB for men’s senior cricket. However thankfully I have been very well looked after by Millichamp and Hall. I have known the guys there for a long time and they have been very generous to me. They are friends and they look after me really well.”
